How well do you think you know your partner? After playing Curious Humans, you may discover some shocking facts about your loved ones.
Curious Humans is a revealing game where you try and guess if statements made by other players are true.
It was sent to me a few weeks ago and I’m still enjoying it. There are 4 types of statement cards: ‘General’, ‘Awkward’, ‘Controversial’, and ‘Sexy’. The idea is that you deal 7 cards to each player, along with a ‘true’ and ‘false’ card. The other players have to guess if the statements you make are true or false. This sounds like a great way to see how well you know your friends/loved ones. If you are in a manipulative mood, then it might be interesting to pay close attention to the others when they are lying. It is inevitable that this will happen at some stage during the game. Personally, I wasn’t interested in playing to win. I also believe that the rules were made to be broken and I actually used it as an icebreaker game instead.
Let me explain:
My Venusian rules went like this: you pick a card from the deck (any category) and you explain whether it is true or false for you. It served as a springboard for a deeper conversation.
I played it at my local Toastmasters club just a couple of weeks ago. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Toastmasters is an international public speaking and leadership club. There is a section of our meetings called ‘table topics’. It consists of short impromptu speeches of between 1 or 2 minutes. When I was Table Topic Master at a recent session, I thought it would be a great idea to bring the Curious Humans cards along with me and get my colleagues to help me to try it out.
Given that the slogan of the game is “the truth may shock you,” I felt it was necessary to make a ‘safe’ selection of the cards beforehand. Although I love provocation, I didn’t think that Toastmasters was the correct place for it for obvious reasons.
Around 8 individuals had to choose a card and talk about their statement and explain in detail if it was true or false for them. Everyone really enjoyed the game. A few members even approached me after the meeting to thank me again for organising such an entertaining task. Despite this, there were a couple of tense moments when I discovered that some risqué cards were still part of my ‘safe’ selection. If only I had double-checked!
According to my way of playing, there was no winner because that wasn’t the objective. Instead, it was simply a way to encourage people to speak in public about something that was already familiar to them.
On another occasion, I played it with my significant other. This was a very different experience as I didn’t have to make a safe selection. In fact, the juicier the better! Interestingly, it wasn’t the ‘Sexy’ category that got us going. We discovered that we are both able to play the piano, something I don’t share with many people. It became a springboard for a long conversation where we reminisced about our music classes in the past.
That’s the beauty of icebreaker games. All too often, our interactions are predictable and boring. Here in Barcelona which is a very transient city, the conversations don’t vary much. They usually consist of: “Where are you from?” “What do you do?” And “How long have you lived here for?” Thanks to Curious Humans, one can have a deeper conversation. It could even initiate a debate if you choose some of the ‘Controversial’ cards. And of course, you can have lots of fun.
The ‘Sexy’ stack is ideal for playing with good friends, potential conquests during flirting or dating. You could even enjoy it with an established partner to try and get to know them a bit better or simply to keep the spark alive. If you play it during the dating phase, before having sex, it could help you to decide whether you really want to indulge or not. You might potentially find out something about your date that is a dealbreaker…
It can also be used as a drinking game or you could even play it with the family during the Holiday season. But be advised to make a selection accordingly!
In my video below, I play the game with myself and I reveal some things that not even my closest friends know about me.
